The perfect solution for a pothole near you
Potholes. They cause issues for motorists and councils all over the country. From an uncomfortable bump as you drive over them, to the costly and inconvenient damage caused to vehicles, not to mention the potentially dangerous driving conditions. Fixing potholes with the standard hot asphalt doesn’t just take a significant amount of time and money, it also isn’t durable. Many pothole repair jobs are broken again after only a few days or weeks.
A new Kiwi company is leading the way in road repairs, with a revolutionary recycled product. Using technology that was developed in Siberia, Road Surface Products has introduced a new sustainable roading product that is manufactured right here in New Zealand for New Zealand roads and weather conditions: Road Patch.
Made up of 97.5% to 98% recycled asphalt millings, along with shredded tyres and a small amount of polymer-based chemicals, Road Patch is an easy-to-use and sustainable product that can be applied quickly, without heavy machinery, and in any weather - and it lasts the distance. Currently old roads are ripped up into millings, which are dumped in stockpiles at landfill sites as there is no use for them.
“Millings is when they scrape the top surface of the road and throw it away in landfill. We take the millings and mix it with a small percentage of a polymer binder, and mix in shredded tyres from here in New Zealand,” says Shai Lanuel, Managing Director of Road Surface Products.
“Nothing else in the industry is even 50% recycled.”
Usually, the method for fixing a pothole is to “cut a square to make it a good shape, put bitumen in, then hot asphalt. Compact it with machinery, then put a sealer on top. And you need to close the road for a while,” says Lanuel. “When you use our product, you don’t need to do any of that. Just clean the hole for loose stones, and it only needs one person to fill the hole in with Road Patch, and then drive over it with a car a few times. Then open the road again.” Minimal delays for road users, lower cost, and no heavy machinery needed.
The accessibility and strength of Road Patch means it can be used by the everyday kiwi wanting to fix their driveway as well as contractors and councils working across Aotearoa’s infrastructure.
Roads are most likely to break in winter when it’s wet, and it’s difficult to work with hot asphalt in the cold. In addition, hot asphalt (and the contractors to apply it) can be hard to source in some parts of the country, leading to long waits of three weeks to three months for pothole repair. Road Patch is a fast available and long-lasting fix, which can be applied in cold weather.
“A big difference with Road Patch is that it has a long in-ground life,” says Lanuel. “It’s not a temporary fix, not just for a few weeks.”
For bigger than pot hole jobs, Road Surface Products also provide another advanced roading solution; a sealant and road rejuvenator. “Take a road that’s 1-20 years old, and spray it with Road Renew. No need for maintenance for 8-11 years,” says Lanuel. Road Renew seals the top of the road to protect it from water, UV rays, and oxidisation. The product permeates the asphalt down to 80mm; for context, most roads in New Zealand have a depth of 50mm. “Penetrating the asphalt with the sealer gives it flexibility and strength back, which also makes it more durable,” says Lanuel.
Road Surface Products use revolutionary and proven technology to make the “country better off financially, and the planet better off environmentally,” says Lanuel.
